Canasta
Printable Canasta Rules (One Page)
The short answer: Here is the whole game of canasta on one printable page. Canasta uses 108 cards — two standard decks plus four jokers. Two players are dealt 15 cards each, draw two and discard one, and need two canastas to go out. Four players in partnerships are dealt 11 each, draw one, and need one canasta between partners. A canasta is seven or more cards of one rank — 500 natural, 300 mixed — and the first side to 5,000 wins.
Or press Ctrl+P (Command+P on a Mac). The menus and this introduction stay off the paper — only the sheet below prints.

Card values

| Red 3 (bonus card) | 100 each; all four 800 |
Melds
- 3 or more cards of the same rank; suits don’t matter.
- At least 2 natural cards, at most 3 wilds. Never all wild.
- Add only to your own (or your side’s) melds.
- Threes are not melded — except black threes (3 or 4, no wilds) on the turn you go out.
Canastas (7 or more cards)
- Natural (no wilds): 500 — red card on top.
- Mixed (with wilds): 300 — black card on top.
First meld minimum
| Your score | First meld |
|---|---|
| Below 0 | 15 |
| 0 – 1,495 | 50 |
| 1,500 – 2,995 | 90 |
| 3,000 and up | 120 |
Card values only — bonuses don’t count. Several melds may be combined.
Taking the discard pile
- You always take the whole pile.
- Not frozen: use the top card with a natural pair, or with one natural + one wild, or add it to a meld you have.
- Frozen — a wild card in the pile, a red three or wild as the first upcard, or (for you or your side) before your first meld: only a natural pair matching the top card takes it.
- A black three on top blocks the next player.
Red and black threes
- Red three dealt or drawn: lay it out, draw a replacement.
- Red three that comes with the pile: lay it out, no replacement.
- No meld at all when the hand ends: red threes count minus 100 each.
Going out & scoring
- Meld every card (final discard optional) with the canastas you need.
- Going out +100; concealed (whole hand in one turn, nothing melded before) +200.
- Add: canasta bonuses, red threes, and the value of every melded card. Subtract: every card left in hand.
- Last stock card is a red three: lay it out — the hand ends, no meld, no discard.

Is there a printable version of canasta rules?
Yes — this page. Press Print (or Ctrl+P, or Command+P on a Mac) and the one-page rules sheet prints on US Letter paper with the website’s menus left off. It covers both the two-player and the four-player game.
What is different about canasta for 2 players and for 4 players?
Two players are dealt 15 cards each, draw two cards from the stock and discard one, and need two canastas to go out. Four players in two partnerships are dealt 11 each, draw one card, and need one canasta between partners to go out. Everything else is the same.
How many points do you need to win canasta?
5,000. If both sides reach 5,000 on the same hand, the higher total wins.
What is the minimum first meld in canasta?
It depends on your score at the start of the hand: 15 if you are below zero, 50 from 0 to 1,495, 90 from 1,500 to 2,995, and 120 from 3,000 up. Only card values count — canasta and red-three bonuses don’t.
